Guardians of the Galaxy 2: Review

My first film review! So let's make it a nerdy Marvel film first.

Guardians of the Galaxy, the first film was wonderful. Of course that is my opinion. I love the jokes, the music, the action. All of it was brilliant. Guardians of the Galaxy 2, lives up to the brilliance of the first film.
Of course, we now know the characters after their introduction in the first instalment. They haven't changed in the second film. Well, aside from Groot now being a cute little baby version of himself and Drax being hysterical. Seriously, he is hilarious in this film without even trying.

The film starts with the Guardian's being hired to defeat a big crazy alien beasty, whilst also protecting some important batteries. However, this is Guardians, if you think them doing a job well done is going to be straight forward, then think again. Rocket, being Rocket, decides to steal some of these batteries they're hired to protect. And of course, that's when shit starts to hit the fan and The Guardians find themselves with a new enemy. However, if you think that the film revolves around these new enemies (The Sovereign race) well, it kinda does but, at the same time doesn't. They're mentioned/shown throughout but, they're not the main villains of the sequel. That award is handed to Ego (yep, that's right he's called Ego and trust me it suits him), who happens to be Starlord's mysterious father.

Now, when we're introduced to Ego, you can tell something isn't quite right. You just can't put your finger on it but, you know something doesn't feel how it should. Now, him being called Ego at first seems odd. However, the further you get into the film, the more you realise "Yeah, you know what that suits him." The guy is a frickin God. Kinda. It's a bit odd. He created himself! Again, odd. He created the planet that he lives on! Which is actually called 'Ego's Planet'. Now, not all of the Guardians are on this 'Ego Planet'. Rocket, Baby Groot and Nebula (yeah she's with them but she's a prisoner) are on a different planet with their rather busted ship, whilst Peter, Gamora and Drax are discovering more about Peter's estranged father. It is through Ego that we meet Mantis, a sweet, innocent being who is rather dim, which means her and Drax get on swimmingly. Whilst visiting Daddy dearest, it becomes clear from the way in which Mantis acts, that something is seriously wrong. Of course, the first instinct that the viewers had when first presented with Ego was correct. There is something SERIOUSLY wrong with this dude. I'm not going to give it away though, you need to actually see the film for that! It was a bit of shock personally though.

Now, Guardians 2 has a strong exploration of family bonds and what it means to have a family. Nebula and Gamora are famously not the best of friends, something that again is revisited in this film. However, as the film progresses it becomes clear that the hatred between the two isn't quite what you think. Nebula and Gamora are still not the best of friends or have the same intentions however, they do fix their differences and embrace each other as sisters. Whilst the film explores Nebula's hate, a light is shown on both hers and Gamora's childhoods and upbringing by Thanos. The description of their childhood perfectly highlights Nebula's hatred towards her father and it makes so much sense as to why she does hate him and I really don't blame her!

It's not just Nebula and Gamora's relationship that is explored during this movie, more light is shown upon Yondu. Now, most viewers didn't know what to think of Yondu in the first movie. Is he a good guy or a bad guy? No-one was really sure. That feeling continues into Guardians 2. You're not quite sure to begin with. That said, more is learnt about Yondu, why he stole Peter in the first place, why he acts irrationally at times. You soon discover that Yondu, is a brilliant character and has been the whole time. Now here comes a HUGE SPOILER. Just as Yondu redeems himself and becomes a good guy and helps save everyone, most importantly Peter, he dies. Just after telling Peter "He may have been your father but, I'm your daddy." he sacrifices himself to let Peter live. And just like that my heart broke. Now, I think Michael Rooke is a brilliant actor. I loved him in The Walking Dead and again I loved him playing Yondu. I hated it when he was killed off in The Walking Dead, so him again being killed off was just horrid. Now Yondu does get a beautiful send off at the end of the movie, which was great to see (even if I was seriously desperate to use the ladies room as I drank too much Diet Coke) but, I just felt that more could have been explored with Yondu. He was such a great character, it just felt he was gone too soon!

Now, of course you might have heard that Baby Groot and Drax steal the show in Guardians 2. This is true. Baby Groot and Drax are both innocent and funny and bring the majority of the humour to the film. I've recently read articles that people with autism feel Drax represents them, something that watching Guardians 2, I can totally see. Some of the things that Drax says is very true to those with autism (Ash's stepbrother is autistic and an old friend's brother too has autism, so I've seen it first hand). Although I've also read that this representation is accidental, it's clear to see that this will be used in future Guardians films. Why not use this accidental representation to Marvel's advantage? It's great for those with learning disabilities to find someone who is a hero and just like themselves.

Overall, Guardians 2 is yet another brilliant Marvel film. The music, humour and storyline are what we've learnt to expect from Marvel, especially Guardians of the Galaxy. The film perfectly sets up future storylines for Guardians, whilst not giving too much away. Oh and of course, the Stan Lee cameo is a moment of brilliance.
I'm a sucker for Marvel films and I was not left disappointed by Guardians 2. It is a film I highly recommend to all, even if you usually avoid Marvel/Superhero movies, this is one anyone can enjoy, from the comic book lovers, to just general film lovers. Guardians 2 takes you on a journey of emotion but still manages to make you feel happy at the end of it.

I rate Guardians of the Galaxy 2: 8/10
