A jar of Jam
Much to the disbelief of my boyfriend, Ash, (sorry) I won't be writing about him first. Instead, I'll be writing about my best friend Jamie (Jam).
Now, this guy is essentially me but, well you know, a man's body instead of a woman's. Although, he is doing a damn good job in that second photo.
We met at uni. Both doing the same course but, he specialises in design whilst I focus on multi-camera production (TV). We actually met through my ex, but who cares about that idiot? Our friendship basically started because we would sit in lectures together and end up making each other laugh at the most inappropriate of times. One lecture in particular will always go down in history for almost getting ourselves in a lot of trouble for uncontrollable fits of laughter, (DICKIEEEEE - don't worry reader, you won't get it, it's purely for Jam's entertainment).
Throughout the whole of 2nd year we sat together in our joint lessons, trying to make each other laugh and trying to make sense of whatever it was we were meant to be learning. That is the basis of our friendship.
As it turns out, we have everything in common, aside from the fact Jam dislikes children and I'm the most broody thing ever. We're both crazy dog people, we see a dog, we scream. And without a shadow of a doubt one of us will end up stroking that cute little doggo. The hours that have been spent talking about different Game of Thrones theories, the things we love/hate about Harry Potter books and films. How on Earth will they end The Walking Dead?! OMG THAT WESTWORLD EPISODE! Yep, we watch the same things and spend forever talking about it. Honest, we do actually get some uni work done too...
Although we do spend a lot of time talking about fan theories and generally just geeking out over the latest episode of whatever it is we watched, as well as eating a lot of cake and chicken nuggets, we do actually get some work done. How, I don't know, it's a mystery even to me. Now Jam is super amazing at design, like CRAZY amazing (check out his instagram: jamieillustrates). His design work is first class, like literally in university terms. So whilst he can finish his dissertation with like a month to go (not at all jealous about that 😰) I'm not so blessed in that department. I get easily distracted and well, I'm a huge procrastinator. I'd much rather spend the day asleep or just not really doing anything. Although, I do love being productive as it makes me feel really good about myself and makes you feel like you've achieved something rather than absolutely nothing. Luckily for me, Jam is always there to help me out with my work. If I'm stuck on a piece of work and it stresses me out (which happens too often) he helps me out. With my dissertation, he came round to my place and just sat and did some work he had whilst he listened to me ramble about how women are super awesome in The Walking Dead. He would help me out when I got a mental block and came up with new points of discussion. Basically, he's a very talented artist and incredibly smart too. I'm not jealous. Nope. Not one bit. 😨
But it's not just all about the geeky conversations or the work that makes me love my best friend. The main thing that makes Jam stand out, is the way he is always there for me. I've been really unfortunate with my health this past year. Jam has been there every single step of the way. When my anxiety was at breaking point, he helped me out, he sat and listened to me and gave me advice from his own experiences.
In March I suddenly became very ill. I don't have a huge memory of it as I wasn't with it. My boyfriend Ash phoned Jam and told him to run to mine and to call an ambulance too. Jam lives about a 20 minute walk away from mine. We both hate sports and would rather be on a comfy sofa rather than run. He ran. He ran to my apartment and called the ambulance at the same time. He then stayed with me all night. He sat and held my hand whilst I was in resus until about 3AM when I told him to go home and get some sleep. The next day he came back and again sat with me on the ward and comforted me. He is truly the best friend anyone could ever ask for and I am so so thankful that he's my bestie.
Jam does an awful lot for me and truthfully I feel guilty. What do I do for him? I can't help him out with his design work as I'm a bit pants and he's such a wiz anyway! The only way I ever feel I can repay him is by cooking him jacket potatoes and chicken nuggets when he comes round.
To have a best friend who you never fight with, whom you can always rely on, the kind of best friend where you can just chill in your pjs for hours wrapped in blankets watching movies, the kind of friend who just laughs when you're an idiot, all of those and so much more is the best thing in the world and I am so incredibly lucky.
Everyone should have a jar of Jam.
